2022-2023
Utilizing image transfers and improvisational sewn piecing methods I connect past and present while moving between the traditional and contemporary. The distortion of remembering is rendered by investigating connections between present and memory. I employ different types of image transfers, inverse, and reverse of childhood photographs on cotton along with use of repurposed organic materials including naturally dyed cotton, silk and/or handspun wool to construct these soft sculptures reminiscent of comfort objects.
A central theme throughout my work is one of trauma’s definitions being the undo interruption of the past onto the present. I work to heal and mend that occurrence into a newly constructed narrative while utilizing the tangible traces of that trauma left behind: the image. I intuitively fracture the image, the embodiment of fractured memory, to gain control and create a new narrative. Playing within the rigid frameworks of quilting patterns, I subvert the intimate nature of these objects into a nuanced conversation with my audience surrounding familiarity, comfort, and discomfort.
A lifetime of grappling with the reality of abuse, the consequence, becoming mentally ill, physically ill and disabled, I'm learning to have a greater commitment to life itself. Through cultivating an impetus for care of myself, paying greater attention toward the person I am and the body I have while listening to the sacred compass within I create art from real, experienced, life.
